Choosing the right financial advisor can be a tough decision. The person you choose will have knowledge of, and some aspect of control over your finances. It can be hard to find someone that you trust and that is experienced in the areas that you need assistance with.
We have listed three tips to guide you in selecting the right financial advisor for you.
Tip 1: Work out what are you looking to achieve
Before seeking out for an advisor, you need to understand what you want to achieve and what your goals are. Once you know this, seek an advisor who has experience in the particular area/s that you’re looking for advice on, whether that’s cash flow, business growth, investments, debt structuring etc. Finances, wealth, and business can all be really complex, so you need to be sure that a potential advisor has experience and knowledge in the area that you need help with.
Tip 2: Seek references
A good financial advisor will have a list of references or testimonials from past clients that speak to their experiences. Seek out references from other people who’ve had similar problems or situations to yours. You can even ask the advisor for their contact information. Don’t rely only on reviews on Google or social media as these often aren’t trustworthy.
Tip 3: Ask about instances where things didn’t go to plan
Absolutely no one has a perfect record; we are human, and sometimes we make mistakes. When interviewing a potential advisor, ask them about a situation they were involved in professionally where things didn’t go to plan. Find out what they did to overcome or change that situation, and what the end result was. This allows you to see how your adviser adapts to change, how they problem-solve, and how they deal with tricky situations.
Working towards financial freedom is not easy; it is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to make sure you have a trusted partner by your side, who can work with you for many years to come, to create the future that you deserve.
